The Benfeita Trail was inaugurated in 2014 and is always held the weekend before 15 August, the national holiday and high point of the Festivals in Honour of Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
As the name suggests, the race takes place in the Aldeia do Xisto of Benfeita, forming is part of the District Trail Running Circuit of the ADAC- District Association of Athletics of Coimbra.
The route uses part of the Benfeita Schist Path - Frescura das Cascatas, and also goes along old paths that linked up the villages and new trails that were discovered after the forest fires of 2017.
The first four events were supported by Benfeita Parish Council and the Liga de Melhoramentos. The 2018 race was organized by the recently-created Clube Naturalmente Benfeita.
With an average of 250 athletes, the Benfeita Trail is seeking to grow and maintain itself as a benchmark for lovers of trail running and mountain hiking.
The beautiful setting, the fine food, the local traditions and the people all add to the appeal of participating in this event.
