Establishing the ZPA - Reforestation
Immediately after the great fire that affected Ferraria de São João last June, the villagers mobilised around a common interest - the setting up of a Village Protection Area (VPA).
The main aims of this activity are to cut down the eucalyptus trees within a 100-metre radius of the houses, to replace them with indigenous trees in an orderly manner, and to implement joint, sustainable land management in this area.
On 11 and 12 November Phase 6 of the Fazer Acontecer project will continue in Ferraria de São João. This phase consists of preparing the land (removing roots), implementing measures against soil erosion (levelling the land and building barriers), planting indigenous species trees and putting in place a system to protect the trees which have been planted.
