The Ferry

In the old days, the ferry was the only vehicle that allowed people, animals and merchandise to pass from one bank to the other.

The crossing was the responsibility of a ferryman, who was paid by all users who did not own their own boat. Use of this service gave rise to the celebrated cry "Ahoy there ferry!", used to call the ferryman whenever there was a crossing to be made.
