river beaches
One of the best known bathing spots in the region.
Located within the Albino Mendes da Silva Foundation’s tourist complex—a benefactor who acquired the 10 hectares of forested land along the Alva River—the São Gião River Beach boasts an extensive swimming area surrounded by oaks, cedars, pines, poplars, willows, and plane trees. The complex includes a campsite, picnic area, residential lodging (in chalets and the Choupal guesthouse), a restaurant, a playground, and walking trails that follow the watermill channel and lead to an upstream bridge over the river.
Founded in 1970, this complex and river beach make use of former estate facilities, including a traditional mill, olive press, farmhouse, and a textile factory, and are among the most well-known spots in the region. Over the years, several enhancements have been made, from the construction of a dam to increase water depth to the addition of a diving platform. After a refreshing swim, be sure to visit some of the cultural and environmental “7 Wonders” of the Oliveira do Hospital municipality.
As an Accessible Beach for All, São Gião offers full support for visitors with reduced mobility and provides information in braille.
