Born in the Açor Mountain, near the village of Piódão, the Ceira is a tributary on the left bank of the river Mondego, into which it flows near the Portela do Mondego Bridge, in Coimbra. In addition to its many weirs, the route also includes the old Alto Ceira Dam, close to Pampilhosa da Serra, in operation since 1949. Its tributaries are the rivers Arouce, Dueça (or Corvo) and Sótão.Spanning 100 km, the river Ceira follows the last stretch of Estrada Beira (EN-17) passing through localities such as Malhada Chã, Covanca, Porto da Balsa, Fajão, Colmeal, Góis, Serpins and Foz de Arouce, across a beautiful scenery permanently framed by tree groves and a few rocky cliffs.
Flora and fauna
Fruit-bearing trees can be found along the river, such as chestnut, cherry, apple, quince, loquat, walnut, olive, peach, and pear trees. The fish of the river Ceira - barbs, bogues and spiny dogfish - are much appreciated for their taste and texture.
