Penela Castle dates back to the 11th century and is believed to have been an important piece in the Mondego defensive line. Its current appearance dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
Inside is the Church of St Michael, whose first origins date back to the 12th century. Inside, the baroque carvings and the Image of the Lady with the Child, by João de Ruão, from the middle of the 16th century, are noteworthy.
