Penedos de Fajão

The Penedos de Fajão, located a few kilometres from the Schist Village of Fajão, municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra, are almost 900 metres high, providing a view over the entire horizon.

These tall and gigantic quartzite rocks, whose configuration is reminiscent of ancient natural castles, are occluded by caves and form natural fortifications that have been, throughout history, used by various peoples. And they have names: Oven, Church of the Moors, Penalva or Gate of Falsehood.

Here, we are in the middle of the Natura Network and it is the forest that predominates. The heather, the strawberry tree and holm-oaks that resist the winds and do not acquire the volume of trees in lower areas, paint the landscape where schist rocks form the landscape.
