Shortly after leaving Vila de Rei in the direction of Sertã, he finds the detour to Picoto da Melriça, where a 1st order geodesic landmark, built in 1802, establishes the Geodesic Centre of Portugal. It means that it is exactly in the center of the country. With an altitude of 600 meters, this place allows its visitor a 360º view over a vast horizon, in which Serra da Lousã and, with clean weather, Serra da Estrela stand out - almost 100 kilometers away.
This is where the Geodesy Museum is located, a museum space dedicated to science regarding the shape and dimensions of the Earth and other celestial bodies, where instruments and information panels are presented and where you can request a diploma to visit the Geodesic Centre of Portugal. Besides an excellent viewpoint, there is also a picnic park.
