environment and biodiversity
The Aldeias do Xisto region is home to more than half the world’s population of this rare species.
The Azereiro (Prunus lusitanica subsp lusitanica) is a species that only occurs in Portugal, Spain, a corner of southwestern France and a small area of Morocco.
But it is in the area of the Aldeias do Xisto that this tree is found in its greatest concentration - at the Mata da Margaraça - and, as a whole, this area is home to more than half of the world’s population of the species.
This is one of the most beautiful trees in our forest. It is evergreen with clusters of sweetly fragrant white flowers.
It can be seen around the following Aldeias do Xisto: Aigra Nova, Aigra Velha, Álvaro, Benfeita, Candal, Comareira, Fajão, Gondramaz, Pedrógão Pequeno and Pena.
