The project Aldeia Viva (Living Village) in Ferraria de São João aims to unite the community and keep alive the traditions of this Aldeia do Xisto. Started in 2011, by the Association of Residents of Ferraria de São João, in partnership with the Municipality of Penela, the initiative is part of the Aldeias do Xisto’ Animation Plan, benefiting from European Union co-financing through the PROVERE Aldeias do Xisto programme.
Educational plan
- Recovering and promoting traditional culture;
- Educating for ecology;
- Providing moments of experimentation and exploration essential to learning.
Sports plan
- Promoting physical activity in direct contact with Nature;
- Associating the practice of sports with didactic activities.
Social Plan
- Encouraging interaction between the inhabitants of the village and the general population;
- Moving different types of public from the municipality and from other municipalities in the country;
- Promoting exchanges.
Aldeia Viva Activities
Fresh Cheese Workshop
The visitors can try their hand at milking the goats and then participate in the whole process of making the cheese in an artisanal fashion. At the end, they can savour and share the wonderful taste of fresh goat’s cheese.
Bread workshop in a wood-fired oven
Using different recipes and different flours, participants will make different types of bread. In this workshop, they will also learn how to heat the oven, check when it is hot, clean it and “pour in” the bread.
