villages and territory
The Açor Mountain - the fifth highest in mainland Portugal - constitutes the northern quadrant of the Aldeias do Xisto territory, ensuring the continuity of the Central Cordillera, from Estrela Mountain.
Classified as a Protected Area in 1982. Most of the area belongs to many private owners. One part is fallow land. Its 382 hectares cover two points of particular interest: the Margaraça Forest and the Fraga [cliff] da Pena. The ICNF- Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation owns the most significant part of the Margaraça Forest.
