Açor Mountain
This is a group of villages in which the dominant building material is schist. However, nearly all the buildings are rendered. Some of them use granite in the doorways and window frames. All the villages are the centres of their parish.
Schist Villages included:
Villages in Açor Mountain
Benfeita
Every 7th May the bell tower of this “white village” commemorates the end of World War II with 1620 peals.
Fajão
Fajão nestles peacefully between the quartzite cliffs of the Penedos de Fajão and the River Ceira. And a certain Monsignor immortalized it in stories and woodcuts.
Sobral de São Miguel
The inhabitants of this village believe it to be the "Heart of the Schist". Its relationship with schist is evident everywhere. However, this village is not made just of stone. It is well worth finding the small treasures hidden in São Miguel.
Vila Cova de Alva
A street where a significant number of door and window frames have Manueline features takes us back to the architecture of the 16th century.
