Within the scope of XJazz- Jazz Encounters in the Aldeias do Xisto, Pedro Melo Alves will undertake an artistic residence in Aldeia das Dez from August 1st to 15th, where he will work on compositions for future projects.
The artistic residence includes a concert, scheduled for 11 August, at 9:30pm, in which he presents “O”, a drums and percussion solo.
Pedro Melo Alves is a name that anyone whose been paying attention has heard over the last two years. This is mainly due to the fact that he won the Bernardo Sassetti Composition Prize, an initiative of the programme Portugal em Jazz - Associação Sons da Lusofonia - supported by the Ministry of Culture/Directorate General for the Arts, in close partnership with Casa Bernardo Sassetti and Antena 2.
Born in Porto in 1991, he started his musical education at Escola Valentim de Carvalho in 2000. He enrolled in a Jazz Drums course in 2011, at Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo do Porto, which he leaves in 2013 to study Classical Piano and Jazz with Abe Rabade and Daniel Bernardes. In 2015 he headed to Lisbon to study Composition at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa where he was taught by Sérgio Azevedo, José Luís Ferreira and António Pinho Vargas.
The composer is currently preparing several projects for theatre and dance: In "A Boa Alma de Setsuan” (“The Good Woman of Setzuan”), a play by Bertolt Brecht at the Almada Theatre Company, with its premiere on 19 October, Melo Alves will be musical director and will join the cast as musician; "Vox Nihili", a multidisciplinary play by the collective CAOS, with the actress Inês Garrido; and "A Canção de Amor e de Morte do Porta-Estandarte Cristóvão-Rilke", a performance in creation that combines theatre and music, in duo with Maria Duarte.
