MARIA JOÃO 'OGRE
In OGRE, the unmistakable voice of the singer Maria João, joins an electronic and digital instrumental backdrop - the Fender Rhodes and synthesizers of João Farinha, the computer and keyboards of André Nascimento - departing from any specific musical genre. They make music in the true sense of the term, without established aesthetic barriers. Professionally and academically all the elements are jazz, Lusophone music in its blood, in its soul an enormous will to cross borders, mix influences and aesthetics and, at its core, an unconditional love for music.
This is fresh music, a project without parallel in Portugal that goes beyond any label, although, due to lack of a better tile, fits into fusion music. Drum'n'bass, dub, "electro", "8-bit music" and electroacoustics are some of the sounds explored, based not only on original compositions but also on very original adaptations of well-known themes from pop/rock and jazz.
Music that is not limited to the Portuguese-speaking elements, which flavour it, nor to jazz, which holds it, nor to electronics, which guides it. It transforms all these approaches into other realities, other experiences, on the razor's edge, combining references to popular Portuguese, African and Brazilian music - a cultural panoply of great richness - with the contemporary nature of composition and electronics: in various styles, in different languages, without barriers, prejudices or restricting labels...
